TIRUPATI: Tragedy struck a pilgrim party when the tractor trailer in which they were returning home after offering prayers in the Boyakonda Gamgamma temple near Punganur, rolled into a valley resulting in the death of nine persons, including seven on the spot. According to information reaching here, all the victims belonged to the same family and had reportedly gone to the temple for the tonsuring ceremony of one of their children. They were from three different places in the district -- Sadum, Rompicherla and Chinnagottigallu. Sources said that the tractor trailer capsized and rolled into a roadside valley when the driver reportedly lost control. While seven died on the spot, Prameela (35) and Ramesh (40), who sustained multiple injuries, died after they were rushed to the Government hospital, Punganur.
Six women
Among the dead were six women. Of the 16 others injured, four stated to be in critical condition, have been rushed to the Government hospital, Madanapalle. Punganur Cirecle Inspector Malleeswara Reddy and his team reached the spot and rushed the injured to the hospitals with the help of locals. It is a `black Sunday' again in the district for, rather intriguingly, in the nine odd accidents in the district on Sundays since 2003, as many as 118 have perished.
