MCD to identify new roads for traders' relief

Traders are pressuring MCD to include more roads to the list of notified roads

NEW DELHI: Starting Monday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will begin the process of identifying new roads to be included in the list of roads meant for commercial and mixed land use categories. After getting temporary relief from the apex court for traders operating on 2,183 newly notified roads earlier this week, the Group of Ministers formed to look into the sealing issue had asked the MCD to identify new roads for allowing commercial activities and get it cleared from the apex court.

Though the MCD has reportedly prepared a preliminary list of around 1,000 new roads to be included in the list, it would now begin a re-survey of these roads and other areas as well so that a comprehensive list could be prepared and presented to the Supreme Court for clearance.

"It is with great difficulty that we managed to convince the apex court to give relief to traders operating on 2,183 newly notified roads. Though the court has put to scrutiny the entire list, we want that the entire process of identifying roads for commercial and mixed land use is completed at one go and we do not have to approach court again and again for clearance," said a senior MCD official.

But after the list for 2,183 roads was notified, traders as well as political parties had again started pressuring the MCD and the Government for inclusion of more roads in the list. Though both the Government and the MCD had refused to notify more roads, they now think that it is the right time to identify more roads.
