Two arrested in Anant kidnap case

Pawan picked up from grandparents' village

NOIDA: Pawan, another accused in the kidnapping of Adobe executive Naresh Gupta's son Anant, was arrested at Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. He has been remanded to judicial custody.

During interrogation, Pawan purportedly disclosed that he had abandoned Anant at Kakore village fearing that he would get caught. Noida Senior Superintendent of Police R.K.S. Rathore said while Anant came back home on November 17, Pawan went to his maternal grandparents' place, as his grandmother had died.

"We arrested him from his grandparents' village. We have not taken his remand as all the other accused in the case have already been arrested and the ransom amount has also been recovered," said Mr. Rathore, adding that the motorcycle used in the commission of crime was recovered from the parking lot of Ghaziabad railway station.

Pawan and the alleged mastermind Chhatrapal had kidnapped Anant when he was waiting for his school bus near his Noida Sector 15-A residence on the morning of November 13. While the victim's family paid Rs. 50 lakh as ransom for his release, investigations led the police to zero in on Chhatrapal's brother Jitendra, whose mobile phone was used to make ransom calls. During the operation, the police also recovered Rs. 47.5 lakh.

Chhatrapal, who is now in police custody, was arrested at Noida on November 18. The police then arrested his friend Sunil, uncle Veer Singh and aunt Santosh on charges of harbouring the accused.

In a late Sunday evening development, Pawan's uncle Ram Dayal was arrested by the Noida police from his Andwa village residence in Hardoi around 8-30 p.m. According to the police, Ram Dayal had given shelter to Pawan when he was on the run.
