This Day That Age
The Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama, the Maharaja of Sikkim and other Buddhist dignitaries and scholars attended the Buddhist Symposium in New Delhi on November 26. It was presided over by Prime Minister Nehru in the absence of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Chairman of the Buddha Jayanthi Celebration Committee. Dr. Radhakrishnan had to leave suddenly for Madras on hearing the news about the death of his wife, who had been ailing for some time. The meeting stood for a minute in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of Mrs. Radhakrishnan. Mr. Nehru in his speech urged the people to follow the great message of the Buddha which he said was still "so fragrant, so powerful and so topical in this troubled world of ours." Before the meeting started at the huge Vigyan Bhavan hall, Mr. Nehru conducted the yellow-robed, bespectacled Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama and the Maharaja of Sikkim to their seats. Photographers jostled to take pictures of the Lamas who are on their first visit to India.
