This Day That Age
India has demanded an immediate UN investigation of reports of a French armoured build-up in Port Said. Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon, Indian Minister without portfolio, urged the General Assembly to have the Secretary-General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, immediately communicate with the French Government to put the Assembly at rest in regard to these reports. If they were false it was necessary in the interests of peaceful development that "their circulation be frustrated." He said he made no allegation and the Indian delegation had "no desire to accept this news report as factual." Dr. Mahmoud Fawzi, Egyptian Foreign Minister, told the 79-nation world forum that French tanks were being landed at Port Said.
