Changing image of police

Though the police as a law enforcement wing of the Government have undergone changes of character over the years, it is the negative image of the police that still gets prominence in the media.

This was the major grievance the police officers raised at an interaction between the police and mediapersons at Kannur on Monday.

The district police took the opportunity to highlight its activities aimed at improving its relationship with the public.

The police, for example, recently conducted an eye testing camp for drivers as part of its road safety drive. Another initiative was under way to distribute spectacles to those drivers diagnosed to have eyesight problem. Efforts were also on to form children's clubs to make the police children-friendly and thus to allow children to see the police more closely.

Even the police officers who predicted a `tug-of-war' at the press-police debate initiated by the Traffic Police Station here sounded contended that the interaction ended the way it did with each side understanding the nature of the work of the other side.
