The State Pollution Control Board has included the abattoirs in Kaloor and Mattancherry in the list of 27 slaughterhouses in the district that have been directed to be closed down on account of the deplorable condition. In 1996, the Corporation had undertaken before the High Court that the slaughterhouse functioning in the busy Kaloor area would be relocated to Karimugal. A professor from the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, submitted a report to the court in 1997. The report says no slaughtering is done in a hygienic manner and the slaughterhouse dump the offal into a nearby drain, causing environmental pollution. A petition is pending seeking a directive to the Corporation to relocate the abattoir. The petitioner pointed out that the nauseating stench emanating from the slaughterhouse affects the residents in the locality. The authorities should, in the interest of justice, relocate the abattoir and build a slaughterhouse with modern equipment and facilities.
