A secular approach to music

Staff Reporter

MELODIOUS NOTES: Music director Jerry Amaldev leads the `Rock of Ages' musical evening in Kochi.

KOCHI: Kochi-based `Rock of Ages,' organised a musical evening on Saturday to spread the message of love.

Music director Jerry Amaldev led the singers.

Inaugurating the session, Kerala High Court Judge Justice Kurian Joseph said there were songs for all occasions. "Songs must be used to revive society and we should encourage those who are good. What strikes me most about Amaldev is his humility and his no-airs attitude," Justice Joseph said.

"Sophie, a choir member and wife of Prakash Mathen (group leader), told me that a group of young people wanted to form such a group. But there was none to guide them," Mr. Amaldev said. "Great musicians had given shape to church music. But very often, people care very little for that. My aim was to take it to an artistic and aesthetic level — a secular approach to music," Mr. Amaldev said.

He heads the Music Department of The Choice School, Kochi. The evening began with a piano session by Ankitha Ganapathy, who secured eighth grade from the Trinity College, London. From `Deck the Halls with boughs of holly' and `The power of Your Love,' the music spread over to `Once in royal David's city.'

The choir plans to reach to out to deserving musicians and help them with the funds that they expect to generate through performances.
