Special programmes for persons with disabilities

RMNH to observe World Disabled Day on December 3

MYSORE: The Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH) here will organise special programmes on December 3 to mark the International Day of Disabled Persons or the World Disabled Day.

The United Nations observed 1981 as the International Year of the Disabled Persons and the International Day of the Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992 to mark the anniversary of the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons.

Later, the UN declared the period 1983-1992 as the International Decade of Disabled Persons in order to promote equality and full participation of the disabled persons in social life and development.

Structured tours

The RMNH at Siddarthanagar will organise special structured tours of the Gardens for Persons with Visual Impairment accompanied by audio-interpretation and personal explanations. The visitors will be able to understand the details of plants with the help of the Braille labels with additional sessions on touch, feel and learn.

Workshop held

The RMNH has been arranging a series of programmes for persons with disabilities and a workshop on environment for the disabled was held early this year with participants from Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka.

Subsequently, the RMNH launched it first museum garden for the disabled in the country and called "Touch, Feel and Learn Garden" which is a unique bio-resource centre specifically designed to meet the needs of persons with visual impairments.

Registration

Special schools for the blind interested in participating in the programmes scheduled for December 3 may register with senior educational assistant Onkara Naik (94489-79353).
