Associations want better Coimbatore

M. Soundariya Preetha

Submit suggestions to Collector

COIMBATORE: Various construction sector associations and non-governmental organisations here have submitted their suggestions to the District Collector regarding simplifying building rules, land classification and the master plan.

According to president of the Builders' Association of India, Coimbatore chapter, G. Ramamoorthi, getting a building plan approval takes about nine months and developing a residential project takes almost a year. The procedures are also tedious and hence the association has suggested issue of planning permission by the Joint Director of the Local Planning authority here. The procedures should be simplified so that the plans can be obtained soon.

The District Collector organised a meeting here recently with various associations on awareness on building rules, building plan approval and simplification of procedures. The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, said information technology should be used extensively to create awareness on the building rules and regulations. The status of an application for building permit should be available on the website of the Local Planning Authority.

"The sharp increase in economic activity in Coimbatore region calls for a statutory organisation here to deal with issues related to land use and town planning," said D. Balasundaram, the chamber president.

In Coimbatore, due to enormous traffic growth, walking and cycling had become impossible. The LPA should ensure adequate footpaths and cycling paths in the new layouts and restore those present in the existing ones, said Mr. Balasundaram.
