Daily wage employees to launch `do or die' agitation

Special Correspondent

This is to press for regularisation of their services

SHIMOGA: It has been decided to launch an indefinite "do or die" agitation in Bangalore from December 12 to press for regularisation of over 17,000 daily wage employees, president of the Karnataka State Government Daily Wage Employees Federation K.S. Sharma has said.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said that the federation had nothing to do with the ongoing hunger strike launched by a few leaders in Bangalore.

He denied the claim by those who were leading the strike that they had consulted him before launching the fast on Monday. "Daily wage employees are prepared for an indefinite struggle," he said.

Mr. Sharma said that the struggle being launched by daily wage employees during the Suvarna Karnataka year was not without any significance as they too had contributed significantly to the State's development by accepting only half of the salary given to regular employees.

The Government should come out with an offer to regularise the services of daily wage employees to mark Suvana Karnataka, he said.

Coalition's duty

Mr. Sharma said it was the duty of coalition partners Janata Dal (Secular) and BJP to regularise the services as they had openly supported the demand of daily wage employees when they were in the Opposition.

`Promise unfulfilled'

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa had promised that the demand of daily wage employees was reasonable and that it would be conceded. But nothing had been done by them so far on the federation's main demand, he said. Mr. Sharma said he had been touring the State to organise the daily wage employees for the agitation to be launched on December 12.
