Nepal arms treaty signed

Ameet Dhakal

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Government and Maoists finally signed the tripartite agreement on monitoring and management of arms and armies in the presence of the U.N. officials.

Home Minister and chief of the Government's negotiation team, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, and Maoist chief negotiator Krishna Prasad Mahara signed the agreement in the presence of the press.

The agreement, which includes the nitty-gritty of the management of the arms and combatants, now clears the way for the U.N. Security Council to pass its mandate to deploy U.N. personnel in Nepal for monitoring.

The Government and the Maoists had already agreed to confine combatants to cantonments and keep their weapons in storages. The U.N. will do the monitoring of the weapons and combatants.

Addressing a press conference after the signing of the agreement, Mr. Sitaula said, "We have achieved yet another progress in the peace process."
