CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi left for New Delhi to take part in the talks with his Kerala counterpart V.S. Achuthanandan on the Mullaperiyar dam issue to be held on Wednesday. Public Works Minister Durai Murugan, Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy, Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy and the Public Works Secretary S. Rajarethinam were among those who accompanied the Chief Minister, according to an official spokesman. The talks are being held in the backdrop of the Supreme Court's direction in September to the two States, while hearing a petition filed by Tamil Nadu which challenged the operation of the Kerala Irrigation and Water Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2006, vis-à-vis the Mullaperiyar dam. This round of talks will be organised in the presence of the Central authorities. This is the second time in recent years that the Chief Ministers of the two States are meeting to discuss the issue. In April 2000, Mr. Karunanidhi held negotiations with the then Chief Minister of Kerala E. K. Nayanar in Thiruvananthapuram. When journalists asked him in New Delhi if the outcome of the talks would be satisfactory, he said that he believed that it would be so. Asked to comment about the reported move of the Kerala Government to build a new dam at Mullaperiyar, he said that all these issues would form part of the discussions on Wednesday.
