Kerala tourists injured in grenade attack near Gulmarg

Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR: Ten persons, including five tourists, were injured in a grenade attack in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, on Wednesday. No militant outfit has so far claimed responsibility.

Police sources said the tourists from Kerala were on their way from Katra to Srinagar in a vehicle after visiting Vaishno Devi. They stopped at Tangmarg market to have tea, when the grenade exploded around 3 p.m. Several bystanders were also injured. While most of them were discharged after being given first aid, six were shifted to Srinagar.

Tourism officials identified the tourists as Krishan Kumar, Raju Chander Band, Manu Piya, Uni Krishnan and Dharam Raj. Two of them were admitted to hospital, where they were said to be out of danger.

Deputy Inspector-General, North Kashmir, M. Suban Lone criticised the militants for attacking tourists. Director, Tourism, Farooq Ahmad, however, said tourists were not the targets.

The militant outfit, the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, condemned the attack.
