Letters to the Editor
This refers to the article "Media as a partner in national development" (Nov. 27), which talks about the role of media in development politics. A good coach is one who makes his players see what they can be rather than what they are. President Abdul Kalam has given some valuable ideas in the development context. I urge the media, besides accomplishing the eight missions he outlined, to carry more articles and features on the caste system with a view to ending birth-based discrimination and superstitions.
In these days of sensationalism, the President's appeal is timely. One can understand his anguish when he says: "Most of the media give importance to political politics. The nation's important need is development politics." His call for establishing research wings in journalism schools to prepare journalists to update their knowledge and skills should be taken seriously. I am sure the newspaper he has mentioned is The Hindu , which has stood the test of time and maintained its standard.
