RAMANATHAPURAM : The Collector, K.S. Muthuswaamy, on Tuesday said the district administration would extend all possible help for shrimp ryots to create farms through a cluster approach. Inaugurating a seminar on `Shrimp farming through cluster approach,' held here, that was organised by the Marine Products Export Development Authority, he said the district administration had already selected some areas to be given to the farmers under free land scheme. The Government was ready to allot some selected areas, which were not suitable for any kind of cultivation, to farmers on cluster method. Hence, the selected land could be given to the cluster of farmers for establishing aquaculture farming. The Collector said that all activities taken up along the coastal areas had been brought under the Aquaculture Authorities, which were established last year. Under this arrangement, all aquaculture farmers should register their farms. However, many farmers still had not registered. Hence, all shrimp farmers should register immediately so that they could get concessions or subsidy given by the Government. G. Arumugam, Deputy Director, Fisheries, in his presidential address said forming proper inlet and outlet systems through cluster could solve many environmental issues. K.V. Raghu, Deputy Director, MPEDA, said that despite some adversaries, the shrimp culture continued to contribute about 20 percent in terms of volume and about 50 percent in terms of value of seafood exports in the country.
