Tension grips Rajasthan towns

JAIPUR: Tension gripped two Rajasthan towns on Tuesday following group clashes in which one person was killed and about half a dozen persons were injured. The authorities claimed that the situation was brought under control in both the towns by evening.

In Bhilwara district's Bigod town, Siraj Mohammed died when one Fateh Singh allegedly pushed him down after an altercation over sharing irrigation water from one of the lift canals in the Mandalgarh area.

Following a complaint from Saidq Hasan, son of the deceased, the Bigod police arrested Fateh Singh and his son charging them under Sections 302 and 341, Indian Penal Code. The timely intervention of the police seemingly averted the situation taking a communal colour. The post mortem report, which reportedly mentioned heart failure as cause of death, also helped to ease the situation by evening.

The incident in Sawar town of Kekri tehsil in Ajmer district was over encroachment of a portion of the cremation ground owned by the Kahar caste people by a mine owner belonging to a dominant caste. The clash took place when the members of the Kahar community got collected in the vicinity of the cremation ground to protest the previous night's encroachment. Both the groups pelted stones at each other causing injuries to at least half a dozen persons. There was panic in the area as the mine owner's men allegedly fired in the air to scare away the mob.
