Thiruvananthapuram claims men's title

Manjeri: Thiruvananthapuram claimed the men's crown in the Akbar Travels 51st State senior basketball championship at the GBHSS floodlit court late on Monday night.

Thiruvananthapuram downed the in form team Idukki 76-63 in the final.

The collective effort of Thiruvananthapuram side subdued the individual brilliance of Idukki players.

The usually energetic Vijobi Vakkachan and the reliable Monish Wilson struggled to find their moorings in the final for Idukki.

Thiruvananthapuram set a terrific pace in the first half and the side took a handsome lead before its rival could settle down.

Prolific scorer P.V.Hareesh once again proved his worth by zeroing in points from every conceivable angles.

He was well complimented by Vineeth Ravi Mathew and duo took the game away from Idukki.

But Idukki raised visions of a fight back in the second half with T.S. Abhilash and Bobit Mathew leading the charge. Idukki managed to cut down the lead to eight points 56-48 midway through the third quarter.

Thiruvananthapuram cut down the frills and tightened its defense by not allowing space for Idukki players to cut in score from near.

Thiruvananthapuram baulked Idukki's desperate moves and was able to score a memorable win.

Men (final): Thiruvananthapuram 76 (P.V. Hareesh 26, Vineeth Ravi Mathew 18) bt Kottayam 63 (T.S. Abhilash 24, Bobit Mathew 18).
