Kannur town to get a facelift

Various projects being taken

KANNUR: Various development projects are either in progress or in the pipeline to give a facelift to the town as part of the beautification initiatives undertaken by the Kannur municipality.

The projects included the Payyambalam bridge estimated at Rs.2.35 crore, the fish market at Ayikkara estimated at Rs.55 lakh, and pay-and-use comfort stations at various points, said municipal chairman K. Upendran here on Tuesday.

He was speaking at a press conference here.

Work on the proposed Freedom Column project, near the Stadium Corner, would also begin soon. Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty would inaugurate the Golden Jubilee Memorial Building at Thayyil to mark the golden jubilee of the State formation.

The building, constructed at a cost of Rs.5 lakh on municipal land, would house a homoeo dispensary.

The Mini Industrial Estate and the Job Training Centre for Scheduled Caste and Tribe Women would also be opened at the function.

The renovation of the Jubilee Hall would be completed by January. The work was estimated to cost Rs.7 lakh.

New road projects being taken up by the municipality included Kalancheripalam road, Thalikkavu road and Thavakkara approach road, said Mr. Upendran.

The contribution of the municipality to the Payyambalam bridge project was Rs.35 lakh. The Tourism Department and the Public Works Department would shoulder Rs.95 lakh and Rs.1.25 crore respectively.

Three more anganwadis would be started by the municipality, said Mr. Upendran. The comfort stations would be set up at the Stadium Corner, South Bazar and Arattu Road by the Sulabh International.

Efforts to capture stray cattle in the town would resume.
