Alleges breach of model code of conduct at Thiruvambadi Alleges breach of model code of conduct at Thiruvambadi

KOZHIKODE: Opposition members staged a walkout from the meeting of the corporation council here on Tuesday when Mayor M. Bhaskaran refused a Congress councillor to move an urgent motion seeking the Election Commission to intervene in the alleged breach of the model code of conduct at Thiruvambadi where byelection is slated for December 4.

P.K.Mamu Koya, Congress councillor, attempted to move the motion when the council assembled for deliberations in the afternoon. Mr. Bhaskaran, who chaired the council meeting, also did not allow him to speak on the issue.

In another issue the council has also decided to approach the High Court of Kerala against the "unnecessary intervention" of the Ombudsman for Local Self Government Bodies in implementing and utilising funds for different projects. Mr. Bhaskaran said that the Ombudsman was infringing upon the rights of the local bodies.

Speaking on the issue, Communist Party of India (Marxist) councillor V.V. Sivadasan and Janata Dal (Secular) councillor Thomas Mathew said that the functioning of the Corporation office was affected whenever the Ombudsman held a sitting in the city. Senior officials were forced to attend the sittings of the Ombudsman, they said. What provoked the councillors was the order of the Ombudsman directing the Corporation to acquire 1.5 cents of land to construct a drain for the benefit of an individual.

The council also unanimously adopted a resolution asking the Tamil Nadu Government to sort out the Mullaperiyar dam issue amicably with the State.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) councillor U.T. Rajan moved the resolution through a calling attention motion.

Indian Union Muslim League member P. Mamu Koya Haji, through another calling attention motion, asked the Corporation to repair all roads in the city before the month-long Malabar Shopping Festival that begins on December 20.
