Padayatra launched by CPI(M) in Anantapur

Staff Reporter

Demand for basic amenities in colonies

  • Anantapur has 29 residential satellite colonies
  • Government fails to issue house site pattas to the poor residents

MAKING A POINT: District secretary of CPI(M) G. Obulakonda Reddy speaking to slum-dwellers in Anantapur on Tuesday.

ANANTAPUR: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) launched a padayatra here on Tuesday demanding provision of basic amenities in the satellite residential colonies around the district headquarters town.

Speaking during the padayatra on Tuesday district secretary of the party G. Obulakonda Reddy and party leaders V. Rambhupal and P. Prasoona said about 12,000 families were living there without basic amenities like roads and drinking water. The poor, living in these colonies were playing a key role in the development of the town as labourers in construction of buildings and roads, as hamalis, auto drivers and household workers (maids).

    No electricity

A few colonies are groping in dark due to lack of power supply. Repeated requests by the residents had failed to move the officials so far, the party leaders said.

As the Government had failed to issue house site pattas the poor families were forced to approach leaders of different political parties to erect a shelter and were facing police cases and host of inconveniences. Government welfare and development schemes were also being kept away from these colonies on the reason that the residents had no house site pattas.

    G.O on house sites

The Government had issued a GO banning issuance of house site pattas in the radius of 5 kms of towns. Besides, efforts were also being made to remove the hutments in these colonies.

After three days of padayatra, a dharna would be staged in front of the MRO's office on December 2, they stated.
