KOTTAYAM: The Federation of Kerala Associations in North America (FOKANA) Inc. would open its regional office in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday, November 29. The office will be at Nanthancode, said secretary Aniyan George. Benoy Viswom, Minister for Forests and Environment, will inaugurate the new office. FOKANA has scheduled a number of projects to be implemented in the State and the new office will ensure better coordination of the works, Mr. George said. FOKANA was also interested in the emerging tourism sector, and would like to function in the area of medical tourism, Mr. George said. Those from the United States would be able to undergo costly surgeries at one tenth of the cost in Kerala. Given the great strides the State has made in the area of health and the infrastructure facilities available, there was tremendous scope for medical tourism, he said. He called upon the State Government to send a brand ambassador to the U.S. for this purpose. FOKANA would do its bit, he said. Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, Mr. George said FOKANA has completed its preliminary discussions on the proposed airport in Central Travancore area. The State Government should provide the land and the Central Government the sanction for the project so that FOKANA could use its good offices to network with investors. FOKANA has started construction of houses for the homeless. The first phase of the project would see the completion of 100 houses, he said. Another project targets the diabetes patients from the financially backward sections. Selected persons would be given a financial assistance of Rs.5,000 each. FOKANA has also decided to be a participant in the formation of a Malayali Confederation involving non-resident Malayalees, both within the country and outside, he said.
