TNGEA to support trade unions' strike

CHENNAI: Employees owing allegiance to the Tamil Nadu Government Employees' Association (TNGEA) will take part in the strike called by Central trade unions and federations on December 14. It is to highlight the 16-point charter, including demands such as restoring 12 per cent interest on provident fund, making the right to strike a fundamental right and giving up the new pension scheme to be implemented by private agencies.

In a statement here, TNGEA State president K. Rajkumar said he, along with some functionaries of the association, called on the Chief Secretary and apprised him of their intention to participate in the strike.

Golden sword

for Goddess

ERODE: Additional Director General of Police Shankar Bidhiri, who had led the Karnataka Special Task Force team in the combing operations against brigand Veerappan, on Tuesday presented an 809 gram gold sword to Goddess Bannariamman. He told reporters on Tuesday that he had promised the Goddess a sword if Veerappan was captured or shot dead. Gold swords would also be presented to the deity at the Maha Madeswara Malai temple and Goddess Chamundewswari at Mysore. He was utilising a part of the money presented to him by the Karnataka Government to fulfil his vows.

Coaching classes for induction course

CHENNAI: Workers selected by Malaysian firms for appointments and awaiting visas have to necessarily pass the induction course training prescribed by the Malaysian Government.

The Institute of Labour Studies is conducting coaching classes for six days for the course at Tiruchi from December 6. Those interested can contact Overseas Manpower Corporation, 41, Mc Nichols Road, Chetpet, Chennai-31 for details.

Station masters stage demonstration

CHENNAI: Station masters affiliated to the All-India Station Masters Association staged a demonstration in front of the Moore Market Complex here on Tuesday. They demandedfilling of vacancies and posting additional SMs in all stations. According to the Railway police, about 100 SMs from Southern Railway participated in the demonstration led by zonal president M. Shanmugasundaram.

Transferred

CHENNAI: S. Sivaprakasam, State Transport Appellate Tribunal, Chennai, has been transferred and posted as Administrator General and Official Trustee, Chennai. He succeeds A. Ratnavelu, who has been transferred and placed under compulsory wait, according to a High Court notification. — Special Correspondent

Call for status

paper on SEZs

CHENNAI: The Centre should prepare a status paper on special economic zones and place it during the winter session of Parliament, the vice-president of the State unit of the Bhartiya Janata Party H. Raja said on Tuesday. In a statement, he said the status paper should provide details regarding the total number of SEZs. — Special Correspondent

ERODE: The National Blindness Control Society, Erode has been honoured by the Union Health Minister and the State Health Minister recently for performing record number of cataract surgeries. The Joint Director of Health, S. Gnanamani, and others felicitated Dr. Ravikumar, Ophthalmic Civil Surgeon and the Project Manager, Erode unit of the National Blindness Control Society, for the achievement.

Demonstration staged

SALEM: Members of the Tamil Nadu University Self-Financing Wing Guest Lecturers Welfare Association staged a demonstration here on Monday urging the State Government to appoint guest lectures working in the government colleges as regular faculty members. State secretary of the association Sivakumar led the protest.

Woman found dead

SALEM: A 47-year-old woman was reportedly murdered in her house here on Monday night.

The police said Rajamani of Bharathi Nagar was found dead with cut injuries in her house.

Killed in accident

SALEM: A woman was killed and seven others were injured when a mini-lorry lost control and overturned at Kootathupatti near here on Monday night.

The police said Palaniyammal (42) of Thammampatti near Attur and her relatives were returning home in a mini-lorry after attending a marriage, when the accident took place. She died on the spot. The injured were admitted to the Salem Government Medical College Hospital. - Staff Reporter

Fiat on water connection

Thanjavur: The municipal authorities have issued a warning that stern action would be taken against those who have fitted motors to the main tap of their drinking water connection to pump water, and those who have water connection below ground level thus preventing normal water supply to neighbouring houses.

In a press release issued here on Tuesday, the Municipal Commissioner, S. Shanthi, said that such violations had been brought to the notice of the municipality. If the violators fail to comply with the regulations, their drinking water connections would be cut and a fine of Rs. 11,500 would be levied. Criminal action will be initiated against them.

Driver killed

TIRUCHI : The driver of an autorickshaw was killed in a road accident at Iniyanallur near Vathalai in the district on Sunday.

The autorickshaw was coming to Tiruchi from Salem when a lorry bound for Musiri collided head-on with the vehicle. The autorickshaw driver, Samsudeen (29), died on the way to hospital, the police said.

Body found

TIRUCHI: The body of a man, aged around 40 years, was found on the railway track between Tiruchi and Poongudi railway stations on Monday. The identity of the deceased is yet to be established.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 115.56 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 7,979 cusecs, and the discharge 100 cusecs.

Drive against encroachment

Nagercoil: A drive to remove encroachment on Parvathipuram-Kavalkinaru stretch of Nagercoil- irunelveli NH-47, to facilitate the extension and renovation of roadwork, has been taken up by the Highways Department.

The works would be completed before March.

Drowned

VIRUDHUNAGAR : R. Ambika (18), a first-year engineering student, drowned in a well near her residence at Soolakarai on Tuesday. The police said Ambika slipped and fell into the well while bathing. — Staff Reporter

Trekking expedition

Udhagamandalam: A group of cadets from the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, will participate in a trekking expedition organised by the Army Adventure Cell in the Nilgiris between December 3 and 6.

It will be flagged off at the Madras Regimental Centre in Wellington.

Life imprisonment

Udhagamandalam: The District and Sessions Judge, the Nilgiris, N. Authinathan on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for having murdered his wife. According to the prosecution, Mallan (50) of Thummanerikombai near Manjoor, had assaulted his wife Lakshmi (45) in a tea garden following a domestic dispute during April this year. Lakshmi died on the spot and Mallan had escaped.

The Manjoor police had arrested Mallan.

Appointment

Udhagamandalam: Chief Educational Officer Ramaraj has, in a press note here on Tuesday, stated that the Government has lifted the ban on appointing persons on compassionate grounds. Based on this, there is a proposal to give jobs to dependents of persons in the Education Department who had died while in service.

List of persons waiting for appointments as Junior Assistants has been put up on the notice board of the office of the Chief Educational Officer here on November 27.

If any of the names have been left out, it should be brought to the notice of the CEO within five days.
