CPI (M) opposes FDI in in retail

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Secretary of the State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) N. Varadarajan on Tuesday urged the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre to prevent foreign direct investment in the retail sector.

Referring to reports on the Wal-Mart's agreement with an Indian firm, he said in a statement here the move was shocking as it might pave the way for the entry of FDI in the retail sector.

He said Left parties and traders' organisations had been opposing the entry of the multi-national corporations (MNCs) in the country's retail market.
