CHENNAI: NTPC (formerly National Thermal Power Corporation) has floated bids for a 1000 mw coal-based thermal power plant to be established near Ennore creek, on the northern outskirts of Chennai. According to the schedule, the bids will be opened by January end. An elaborate process of scrutiny will be adopted. The authorities hope to award the contract in a few months. Once the contract is settled, 48 months will be given to the executing agency, an official spokesman says. The power project is to be developed in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB). A special purpose vehicle, NTPC-Tamil Nadu Energy Company (NTECL), has been set up for the project, which envisages two units of 500 mw each. Four years ago, NTPC and TNEB signed a memorandum of understanding in this regard. The plant is to come up on an extent of about 1,100 acres of saltpan land, belonging to the Union Ministry of Commerce. The spokesman says the issue concerning the valuation of land has been resolved. The land transfer is yet to take place. As for environmental clearance, the Union Environment and Forests Ministry's committee is yet to hold its sitting. This is expected in the second week of December, the spokesman added. A public hearing for the project was held in September and the public hearing committee gave its nod.
