CHENNAI: The State Government has so far disbursed relief to 79 families, which lost their kin in the recent floods, according to an official release here. Each family has been given Rs.50,000. Relief was yet to be provided to 19 more families who lost their relatives in the floods. The release said Minister for Revenue and Law I. Periasamy conducted a review meeting on the relief measures being carried out in the flood-hit areas. Secretary (Revenue) S. Audiseshiah gave an account of the extent of the flood damage. Owners of 769 fully damaged huts were given Rs. 2,000 each. For 2,761 partly damaged huts, relief was given at the rate of Rs.1,000 per hut, the release said. Owners of 63 heads of cattle were also given compensation. The meeting discussed modalities of a relief package for farmers who lost their kuruvai crop at the time of harvest in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts. It asked authorities to collect details of flood damage in Kanyakumari, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar districts. Steps taken to regulate traffic on the Mettupalayam-Nilgiris road, affected by landslips, were also reviewed. The meeting conducted a district-wise review on the progress made in the second phase of the scheme to distribute free land to landless farm workers. Revenue personnel have been asked to intensify measures to achieve the target in the distribution of free house sites, the release said.
