Vadodara: A debt-ridden farmer at Shera village in Bharuch district died on Monday, after consuming pesticide. It is perhaps the first case of suicide by a farmer in Gujarat. Though the police have registered a case of accidental death, family members claimed that Karsan Parmar (43) took the extreme step as his cotton crop failed. They said Parmar, who owned 12 bighas, could not repay a loan of Rs. 70,000 after the crop failure. Parmar consumed a bottle of pesticide in his village on November 22 and was rushed to hospital in nearby Ankleshwar. When his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to the SSG hospital here, where he died. PTI
