Rs. 6 lakh missing from private bank ATM

Staff Reporter

It was opened 25 days ago

CHENNAI : Police have registered a case of missing cash to the tune of Rs six lakh from an ATM belonging to a private bank on Purasawalkam Gangatheeswaran Koil Street here on Tuesday.

Police said the ATM facility was opened only 25 days ago in the area. As part of outsourcing, a private agency transported the cash and filled it up in the ATM. However, it came to light that the cash meant to be stored in the ATM was missing.

Based on a complaint from the bank authorities, the Purasawalkam police registered a case.

A senior police officer told The Hindu that there was no camera installed in the ATM facility. Preliminary probe revealed that the cash was filled by a private agency. There seemed to be no link or nexus with any of the bank staff.

"We have a strong suspicion that the misappropriation could have been committed before filling the cash in the `chest' of the ATM, as the employees carrying the cash may not have stored it in the ATM. We are also examining whether an outsider having knowledge of cyber mechanisms had a role since tampering of the ATM machine digital locks may not be possible for an ordinary person."

He said the police were hopeful of zeroing in on the accused soon as the pin number was known only to people who handled the cash before loading it in the ATM.

Police said they are questioning the people involved in the transport of cash including the drivers and other suspects.
