Chennai : Today the baby of Sheela Catherine from Nagari is breathing thanks to the Rs. 10.5-lakh high-frequency ventilator (oscillator) donated by the Cognizant Foundation of Cognizant Technology Solutions to the Kanchi Kamakoti Child's Trust Hospital, Nungambakkam. Inaugurating the new equipment and making a donation of Rs. 1 lakh, film actor Suriya said that it was important to give back to society the munificence one has received from the society. Dr. Deepa Hariharan, head of the Department of Neonatology, said that the hospital had a 36-bed neonatology intensive care unit, with facility for the care of high-risk babies. With 1,000 admissions a year, the neo-natal mortality was 20 per 1,000 and the sick babies were brought in ambulances from far-off places including Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. While a conventional ventilator used in case of a damaged lung for a newborn could provide only 40 to 60 breaths per minute, only a high-frequency oscillator could provide 1,000 breaths in the case of a severely damaged lung and when the baby was fighting for life. Chairman of the hospital V. Narayan said that the tariff for treatment was lower than in most other hospitals . He said that with the 200 beds of the hospital being always full, there was a severe space shortage. There were plans to extend the hospital on the lands it owned on the opposite side. He asked for help and support of Cognizant and other business houses when it began its expansion plans. Lakshmi Narayanan, CEO, Cognizant Technology Solutions and Dr. S. Ramamurthy, Director, Cognizant Foundation and S. Sridharan, Medical Director, also spoke.
