Chennai : The State Bank of India on Tuesday gave away cash prizes and certificates to meritorious students of State Higher Secondary School examinations held in March 2006 at a function here on Monday.

S. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, presented awards to N. Kaviya of Sri Ahobilamath Oriental Higher Secondary School, S. Nagalakshmi of SBOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore, N. Janani, T.V.S. Higher Secondary School, Madurai and S. Shriram of SRV Boys Higher Secondary School, Rasipuram, Namakkal for scoring the first three state ranks.

Awards were also presented to S. Nagalakshmi, S. Satish Kumar and R. Usha for topping among the S.C./S.T. students.

Rank holders in 16 other subjects were given prizes.

The Vice-Chancellor said that prosperity by 2020 meant there was a need to educate an additional 30 million people.

Knowledge is power, money, progress and development, he said stressing on the need for education.

P. Chaudhuri, Chief General Manager, State Bank of India said that the bank was functioning as a responsible corporate citizen which contributed to socially useful activities and 2006 was the year of education.
