Clinton to visit Thazhanguda

Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE: Former United States President Bill Clinton will visit the tsunami-hit Thazhanguda here on Friday, as a United Nations Special Envoy.

Official sources the United Nations was considering Cuddalore as the "model district" in terms of relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction undertaken after the December 26,2004 tsunami.

With funding from the United Nations Development Programme, early warning system has been installed in 55 coastal villages in the district.

The system, comprising a wireless set, an alarm device and a public address system, would enable the Collector to communicate with all these villages from his office.

Cuddalore, the sources said, was a good example of how public-private partnership could help the people, especially fishermen, speedily recover from the shock of the tsunami and restore their livelihood.

The district had constructed permanent houses not only for those displaced by the tsunami but also for the Irulas and the Dalits.
