Governor calls for quality orthodontic care

41st edition of Indian orthodontic conference held

CHENNAI: Orthodontists should take the benefits of developments made in their field to the poor, said Governor Surjit Singh Barnala.

"As of date, the prohibitive cost involved in this speciality has made this speciality cater mainly to the affluent," he said. "An orthodontist usually makes a very comfortable living. Personal gain should not be the goal. The basic ethics of good healthcare should always be in his or her mind," he added.

The Governor distributed awards to doctors and researchers who had published papers in international journals and to student doctors who presented papers and posters at the Indian orthodontic conference on Friday. The event marked the inauguration of the 41st edition of the conference. Mr. Barnala urged general practitioners of dentistry to learn the basics of the speciality to enable them to carefully choose people who needed treatment.

He called for cost-effective, patient-sensitive, quality oriented care. He urged doctors to find ways to reduce to nil errors such as misdiagnosis, wrong prescriptions and miscommunication between doctors and patients.

Mr. Barnala also released a souvenir and the Indian Orthodontic Society's directory.

Anil Kohli, President of the Dental Council of India, called for commitment from professionals to teach students the latest techniques and ensure the highest level of quality. The Internet provided potential information to patients, he said. "We need to remain up to date."

The theme of the three-day conference was `Aesthetics - orthodontic challenge'.

Senior orthodontists M.R. Balasubramanian, J.G. Kannappan and S. Rangachari were honoured for their contribution to the field. Akther Hussain, President of the Indian Orthodontic Society, and N.R. Krishnaswamy, organising secretary of the conference, spoke.

T.R. Pachamuthu, Chancellor of SRM Universities, and K. Kanagaraj, Chairman of Raagas Dental College, participated.
