CHENNAI: The 10 students came from different schools and places. Their preferences differed. But, they shared a common platform recently to receive the Young Achiever awards for excelling in various fields. The Sornammal Educational Trust presented the awards to the students, chosen from across the State, at its sixth anniversary celebration on Saturday. The profiles of all the 10 young achievers were striking, as each student was skilled in at least two fields. Paul Karunyam from Deaf and Dumb Higher Secondary School excelled in athletics. The other promising achievers were K. Mahathi, G. Anupriya, S. Vijay Kumar, P. Ilango, Anjali Chandrashekar (visual art), T. Archana (swimming), N. Sivakumar (academics), Uma Girish (creative writing) and G. Karthik (science). Poet Kanimozhi Karunanidhi presented the awards to the students. The award comprised a trophy and a cash prize. Of the 153 applicants, the recipients were chosen on the basis of area and difficulty of achievement and socio-economic background. Daniel Thomas Matriculation Higher Secondary School won the inter-school championship award. The trust also introduced an `Ezhuchi Award' for self-help groups (SHG) this year. Supriya Sahu, Project Director of the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society, presented the award to 30 women SHGs in Chennai. The awardees were chosen for developing the micro enterprise and contributing to the growth of the community. The trust has so far helped 1,600 children get quality education, and 3,000 women by forming SHGs.
