Commanding fear or respect?

M.K. Stalin

At a function organised to distribute cheques under the maternity benefit fund, mothers came with their children. Since they had been made to wait the infants became restless and cranky. Children cried for attention even as the programme began.

Chennai Corporation Mayor M. Subramanian, who spoke first, said the children who had been tearful till then turned silent when they saw the `thalapathi' [as Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin is referred to in the party] walk onstage.

In response, Mr. Stalin said, "When children cry mothers generally say `poochandi varaan' [to hush them]. Some mothers will show the child the moon and quieten it. So, I don't know what Mr. Subramanian meant." The audience erupted in laughter at this quip, however nothing could quieten the babies.
