COIMBATORE: Coimbatore foundries that provide employment to about 50,000 people are facing workforce shortage. The need is for about 10,000 more workers, said C.R. Swaminathan, Chief Executive of PSG Industrial Institute. N. Krishna Samaraj, chairman of Foundry Conclave 2006, Jayakumar Ramdass, Chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry, Coimbatore Zone and Mr. Swaminathan spoke to presspersons here on Foundry Conclave 2006, a two-day programme to be held here on December 7 and 8. The expanding foundries needed more people and the new ones were also in need of workers. Hence, the attrition rate was going up. The onus was on the industries too to improve the Human Resource practices and work environment, Mr. Samaraj said. Coimbatore foundries, with about five large-scale units, produced about 45,000 tonnes of finished castings a month as against 25,000 tonnes in 2004. The production was expected to go up to 60,000 tonnes by the end of next year. About 20 per cent of the production was now exported. All the foundries in Coimbatore were expanding and modernising. Mr. Jayakumar Ramdass said with this growth in mind, the two-day event would focus on HR practices, production technologies and quality initiatives.
