MANGALORE: The mass media had become an information-generating machine today. There was a need for media agencies to understand their social responsibilities, B.A. Sridhar, professor, department of mass communication, said at a seminar on "girl child and education" here on Tuesday. Presenting a paper on "media and women", he said it was important to recognise that the media was a sub system that reflected the attitudes of the overall social system.
Profit driven
All media agencies were profit driven today. Editorial primacy has become a thing of the past, he said. With market forces driving news channels and newspapers, sensational news and gossip ruled the roost. Space devoted to developmental news had reduced considerably. Thus, coverage of atrocities against women and Dalits did not receive adequate media attention. Alternative media systems such as community radios might be able to fill this gap, said Mr. Sridhar.
