HYDERABAD: That a majority of Hyderabadis pay least attention to traffic rules and provisions under Motor Vehicles Act came to the fore once again on Tuesday when police cracked the whip against vehicle owners sporting fancy number plates. And mind you, many violators are not the illiterate, but the well-heeled, gazetted officers and professionals. Many of them said they were not aware of the Sec 39/192 (1) of Motor Vehicle Act that insists on sticking to prescribed format. Some others did not think it is a serious enough violation. For instance, K. Pramod Kumar, a scientist engineer with Advanced Data Processing Research Institute, Department of Space, when asked to pay the hefty penalty argued that he was not aware of the rule. "Every vehicle owner is deemed to know the rules and ignorance is no excuse," says the ACP Traffic (West Zone) T.Ram Sudhakar. Dr. Ramesh Babu of Medwin Hospitals too was not aware that he committed an offence till the traffic police stopped his vehicle for sporting a number plate with golden letters against black background. The police also started seizing number plates from number plate makers violating the format.
