Bangalore: Teachers must ensure that Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) schools and colleges secure a 75 per cent pass percentage in the tenth and second PUC this academic year, BMP Commissioner K. Jairaj said here on Tuesday.

Speaking at a function to felicitate 33 retired teachers, organised by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Schools and Colleges Teachers' Sangha, Mr. Jairaj said that BMP schools witnessed a pass percentage of 48 in SSLC examination and 51 in PU exam in the last academic year despite being provided enough funds to improve facilities.

He said that the BMP had spent Rs. 62 lakh for books and uniforms for its students, Rs. 500 and Rs. 750 as incentive for 10th and II PU students who have passed their exams and Rs. 10,000 for those who attained distinction.

Mr. Jairaj said that the perception about BMP teachers was that they were not disciplined; more involved in politics and did not attend classes. He called on teachers to instil aspiration in the students.

He said that the BMP was undertaking a school improvement programme, where science education would be given importance, libraries and laboratories would be upgraded and orientation classes would be held for teachers.

Anand, secretary of the sangha, urged the BMP to appoint more qualified teachers.

He also said that salaries should be paid by the second of every month and provision for housing should be provided for teachers as they travelled far distances.
