THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Residents of the Secretariat East area on Tuesday blocked the road at the Oottukuzhy junction and staged a dharna to protest the failure of the authorities to repair leaking sewer lines and to highlight the poor condition of the Vanross-Oottukuzhy road. Secretariat ward councillor Biju Harikumar, representatives of the Chempaka Nagar and Officers Colony residents associations and local people participated in the dharna. Residents said the failure to carry out timely repairs had left the road heavily rutted. The three culverts at Vanross junction, near the Madankovil and at the Oottukuzhy junction were damaged, causing overflow of water into the Chempaka Nagar and Officers Colony. Some of the excess water also flows into the Chengalchoola colony where it drains into the main canal. Ms. Harikumar said the situation had worsened after the recent spell of heavy rains when water from the Press Club junction started accumulating at the Oottukuzhy junction. The stagnant water and the silt also entered the sewer lines through a manhole, causing sewage back- up in the houses located in the two colonies. Following the dharna, officials from the sewerage division of the Kerala Water Authority held discussions with the local people. A sucker machine was later deployed to clean up the manhole and clear the silt. The officials also assured the citizens that the slab covering the manhole would be replaced.
