TAKING STOCK: Fisheries Minister S.Sarma inspecting encroachments at the Samudra beach, Kovalam.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Fisheries Minister S. Sarma said here on Tuesday that the Government would initiate legal action against encroachments on the seawall at the Kovalam Samudra beach. He was speaking after a site visit to assess the impact of encroachments on the coast from Kovalam to Panathura. "Any construction activity within 200 metres of the coast, except fishermen's houses, constitutes a violation of the Coastal Regulation Act. The Government will not allow the offence to go unchecked," he said. The Minister said the encroachments of the seawall by private institutions also violated municipal laws. He said the Irrigation and Revenue departments would be consulted to put an end to such illegal activities. Mr. Sarma said he had directed the Additional District Magistrate to issue show cause notice to the owners of the private institutions that had encroached into the seawall.
