KOCHI: Organic Kerala, a new venture in the sphere of organic agriculture activities in the State, will be inaugurated on December 9. The new venture, registered as a charitable trust, promises to be a link between farmers who own small agriculture plots, to provide them a common marketing facility, fertilizer development techniques and even a seed bank in the long run. Organic Kerala will be launched at Changampuzha Park by C.N. Ramachandran Nair, Judge of the Kerala High Court, at a function at 10 a.m. on December 9. M.M. Monayee, Babu Paul and K. Babu, MLAs, and the former justice K.K. Narendran will attend the function. A. Jayakrishnan, chairman of Organic Kerala Charitable Trust, said the inauguration of the new venture indicated the demand among people to return to natural ways of farming. The increasing risk of contracting health hazards ranging from cancer to organ failures have created an awareness of the importance of shifting from the conventional methods of cultivation of food and vegetable crops to a more healthy way.
Information
More than concentrating on large-scale organic production, the new venture will focus on providing information to farmers on organic cultivation and linking people who own small plots. With this in mind, a training course will be conducted for farmers on December 9 at Changampuzha Park between 11 a. m. and 6 p.m. Various methods of organic cultivation, production of organic fertilizer, management of pest, etc., will be dealt with during the training programme. There will also be an exhibition-cum-sale of organic produce at Changampuzha Park. Video CDs on organic practices and methods, directions and guidance on organic methods will be available at the exhibition. S.R. Sundararaman from Sathyamangalam in Tamil Nadu, an organic agriculturist with about 15 years of experience in the field, will share his experience with the farmers on the inaugural day.
