Senior defence officers facing corruption probe

Special Correspondent

Some dismissed and sentenced to imprisonment

  • Court has stayed action in some cases
  • Brig. Iqbal Singh cashiered after Tehelka expose

NEW DELHI: Over 20 senior defence officers are facing charges of corruption, quite a few of them dismissed from service and sentenced to undergo imprisonment.

However, courts have stayed further action in some cases, Defence Minister A. K. Antony told Amar Singh (Samajwadi Party), replying to a written question in the Rajya Sabha.

Among them were Lt. Gen. S.K. Sahni, Maj. Gen. B.P.S. Mander, Brig. S.K. Handa and Brig. P.S. Gill, besides six junior officers, who committed irregularities in purchase of dry rations. Maj. Gen. (now Lt. Gen.) S.K. Dahiya, Brig. D.V.S. Bishnoi and nine junior officers are facing a court of inquiry (CoI) into alleged irregularities in the operation of a frozen meat contract for the Ladakh sector.

Maj. Gen. G.I. Singh Multani, Brig. D.S. Grewal, Brig. G. Illangovan, Brig. Rajeev Devikar and Brig R.S. Rana and five junior officers were facing the CoI in connection with ``certain acts of omission and commission in sale of liquor and financial irregularities.''

Maj. Gen. (then Brig.) K.T.G. Nambiar and Brig. (now Maj. Gen.) Rana Goswami were facing a probe along with two junior officers into allegations of financial and other irregularities.

Action was being taken against Brig. S.S. Rao for allegedly staging fake encounters.

Following the Tehelka expose, a general court-martial of Brig. Iqbal Singh was completed this year and he was cashiered and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for two years.
