This Day That Age
An affectionate welcome was accorded to the Chinese Premier, Mr. Chou En-lai, when he arrived at Palam airport in Delhi on November 28. Prime Minister Nehru was the first to greet the Chinese Premier. The ceremonial reception included presentation of a guard of honour and introduction of the Cabinet Ministers and members of the diplomatic corps to the distinguished visitor. Mr. Chou En-lai, arm in arm with Mr. Nehru, moved around the airport, bending under the load of garlands round his neck, and acknowledging the cheers from the crowd which kept shouting "Long Live India-China friendship". Mr. Nehru then escorted the Chinese Premier to a special rostrum to enable the vast cheering crowd to see him at close quarters. Mr. Nehru said: "India is happy to welcome the Prime Minister of China once again in our midst after two and a half years. His last visit was a short one and he did not then have much time to see things here. This time, he would be able to see the face of both old India and the new India that we are building." In his reply, Mr. Chou en-lai said: "I am extremely happy to have been invited again to visit our great neighbour, the Republic of India. I bring to the Indian people the fraternal greetings from the Chinese people."
