Corrections and Clarifications

The heading of the lead story was "[Union Minister for Coal, Shibu] Soren convicted for murder, resigns" (November 29, 2006, page 1). A reader says "convicted for" is incorrect and should have been "convicted of". The OED says that "convicted of" is what is generally used. "Convicted for" is obsolete.

In "More relief for Gujarat riot victims" (November 27, 2006, page 1), it was stated that there were over 2,000 individuals killed in Gujarat during the communal violence in the State in 2002. A reader wanted to know if this was right, as other media sources had stated that the UPA Government had formally declared that 254 Hindus and 790 Muslims were killed. The post-Godhra death toll, according to the Union Government's official statement made in Parliament in 2005, was 1044 (790 Muslims, 254 Hindus), with 223 people still missing. Most of the missing may be presumed dead. However, these official figures are based on primary data collated by the State Government and for an unspecified period. The figures are believed to be an undercount of the death toll in the violence which began with the Godhra incident on February 28 (which itself took the lives of 60 people) and continued with sporadic incidents till at least the end of August. Most non-governmental organisations active in providing relief to the victims have estimated the death toll to be around 2,000 for the entire period.
