Welcome

The Supreme Court quashing the CBI's closure report on the Taj Heritage Corridor project scam involving the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati is welcome. It rightly expressed the concern that the efficacy and ethics of government servants were coming under scrutiny and policies were increasingly being challenged.

The observation that if such a situation persists "a day will come when the rule of law will be reduced to a rope of sand" is a wake-up call to all those politicians who hope to get away with committing a crime.

R. Ramadurai,
Kumbakonam

* * *

Our politicians swear to uphold the rule of law while assuming office. But they are the ones who violate it without compunction. They come to power in the name of the poor and enrich themselves. When the law catches up with them, they accuse the judiciary of indulging in activism.

The laws need to be changed so that people found guilty of wilfully abusing their office are brought to justice in the shortest possible time. Is it too much to ask?

Ghaziabad
