Vij wins the biggest purse

NEW DELHI: Shot putter Sourabh Vij, who won the silver medal in the Asian junior championships in Macau, walked away with the biggest purse of Rs. 45,500 at a felicitation function organised by the Delhi Development Authority at the Siri Fort Complex here on Wednesday.

Vij, a member of the DDA Athletics Academy, under the overall supervision of Olympian Gurbachan Singh Randhawa, is currently third in the World junior lists for the season with his effort of 20.35m in Chennai in June.

Other athletes in the list of awardees were Harpreet Singh, Ankita Julka and Sanjiv Rathi, the last two away in Bangalore for the Junior National.

Also honoured on the occasion were the members of the DDA Football Academy team that won the ONGC Jubilee under-16 tournament. The players were presented blazers by the DDA Member, Finance, A. K. Patnaik.

The football academy has so far produced six players who have represented Indian teams in different age groups. — Special Correspondent
