KEEPING PACE: Growing vehicle population demands more RTO offices in Chennai. - PHOTO: SHAJU JOHN
CHENNAI : The State Transport department has created new unit offices by bifurcating two Regional Transport Offices (RTO) Meenambakkam and Tiruvallur. The new offices will function at Tambaram and Poonamallee. A unit office is not a full-fledged RTO, but functions under the direct supervision of a regional officer. Still it has powers to issue licences and permits or collect taxes. Department authorities hope that creating the unit offices would help people in completing faster the formalities. The RTO at Meenambakkam caters to sprawling neighbourhoods in the entire southern suburbs, up to Tambaram and on East Coast Road as also those along Old Mahabalipuram Road. At present, residents of these areas travel all the way to Meenambakkam. Similarly, residents in Korattur, Ambattur, Tirunindravur and Nerkundram go up to Red Hills. The authorities said the new unit office at Tambaram would help nearly 12 lakh people and the one coming up at Poonamallee would cater to the needs of nearly 3.5 lakh people.
