TIRUPATI: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has issued orders staying the election to four gram panchayats in the Tirupati (urban) mandal pending a final decision by the Government on elevating the status of the Tirupati municipality to that of a corporation. With the Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice Singhvi and Justice Nagarjun Reddy issuing orders of status quo ante till January 31, the election process, which is already underway for the four panchayats, has now been stopped. The court order comes in the wake of a petition filed by some Telugu Desam functionaries seeking directions to the State Government to stay the elections as a proposal to tag them on to the proposed Tirupati Municipal Corporation was still pending before the Government. Reports reaching here said that senior counsel for petitioner Ramachandra Rao has taken to the notice of the Bench that the Government had kept in abeyance elections to 16 peripheral municipalities around Hyderabad city in view of a proposal to confer it the status of `Greater Hyderabad'. The Bench is said to have agreed with the contention of the senior counsel to apply the same principle in the case of the Tirupati (urban) panchayats as well because their cases were also pending before the Government.
