Four sugar factories in private sector
Special Correspondent
BANGALORE:
To meet the demand of sugarcane growers in north Karnataka, the Government has given permission to set up four sugar factories, all in the private sector.
Two new factories would be established in Gulbarga and one each in Bijapur and Belgaum. Of the nine applications received to set up factories, four had been cleared. The new sugar units would start functioning after a year. The Chamundeshwari Sugar Factory would establish its second unit at Holenarasipur next year, Minister for Sugar S.A. Ravindranath told presspersons here on Wednesday.
The State, which occupies the fourth position in sugarcane production, had produced 240 lakh tonnes of cane.
Now, there were 52 sugar factories in the State. Except, the Godavari Sugar Mills of Mudhol in Bijapur district, all sugar units had started crushing the cane, he said.
Mr. Ravindranath said it was difficult for the Government to fix a uniform price for sugarcane in all districts.
