Himachal Pradesh
Shimla: With a view to enhancing the participatory role of Panchayati Raj Institutions in maintenance and running of public utility services, the Himachal Pradesh Government has decided to transfer the control of water supply schemes to PRIs in a phased manner. Talking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, Rajwant Sidhu, Principal Secretary (Irrigation and Public Health), said only those schemes that were in perfect running condition and only gravity-run projects that did not require pumping would be handed over in the first phase. Sandhu said the Department, in consultation with the PRIs, would work out the manpower requirements for the operation and maintenance of water supply schemes and wages to be paid. The panchayats would be given the option to retain the existing staff or recruit new personnel.
